Health Bulletin:
Wood Dusts Classified a Carcinogen

The National Toxicology Program has listed wood dust in its 10th Annual Report on Carcinogens.
Even more notably, wood dust was assigned the “highest severity” classification.

This is widely viewed as a culmination of numerous studies, and regulations including:

  • OSHA, which specifies an exposure limit of 5 mg/cubic meter
  • NIOSH, which sets recommended exposure at 1 mg/cu meter
  • ACGIH, which established an exposure limit of 1 mg. per cubic meter for
various hardwoods, 5 mg/cubic meter for softwoods.

Effectively removing wood dusts from the workplace has gained new urgency.
