High Efficiency Wet Dust Collection with
Low Maintenance and Operating Costs.

At US Battery Co. in Augusta, GA lead oxide serves as a primary raw material in the manufacture
of lead / acid batteries. The material is toxic, and must be handled with care. Of particular concern
in manufacturing is the lead oxide paste mixing process. Dust particles must be prevented from
escaping to the atmosphere.

The Whirl/Wet selected for the task is especially suitable for collecting lead oxide dust with water.

The heart of the system is the whirl chamber, made up of deflectors in a fixed position.
The water-dust-air mix is passed with high velocity through this deflector system. Here mixing
between the carrier gas and the scrubbing liquid takes place.

To enhance turbulence, a secondary gas stream is injected with high velocity through a
side channel tangential to this chamber. Through this, the rotation of the water-dust-gas
mixture is greatly accelerated.

The turbulence is constant over a wide range of air flow. Differences between +5 and -25%
of the normal capacity are acceptable without affecting efficiency. Droplets in the airstream
are eliminated through the final droplet separator downstream.

Water level is maintained through an automatic level control system. Since water is lost only
through evaporation and/or sludge removal, little make-up is required.

A critical factor in the design of the system is the configuration of the air deflectors. Each one
is laid out for specific applications, thus assuring highest efficiencies.

The 3000 cfm Whirl / Wet has performed well in the US Battery plant. With operating and test
results showing efficiency of 97% on lead oxide, management is assured that the plant is
meeting EPA regulations in regard to lead oxide emissions.
