OIL MIST COLLECTOR | OIL MIST COLLECTOR CASE STUDY Health Effects Bulletin:
Metalworking Fluids and
Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis United Auto Workers and the United Steelworkers of America have sued to force
the federal government to set stricter limits on metalworking fluids exposure.
The standard for exposure to oil mists is now 5 mg. of mist per cubic meter of
air per 8-hour shift. This level does not reflect what is now known about
metalworking fluids exposure. The lawsuit asserts that the current level can
cause serious health problems, including cancer, and a serious lung
inflammation called Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP). The suit
documents 16 cases of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis in a decade,
including one involving 107 workers. Pulmonary fibrosis is one potential complication of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis.
Workers exposed to Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis may not recognize symptoms
until the disease is advanced. Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis can lead to
respiratory failure. UAW currently has contracts that require automakers to limit
the exposure of workers to metalworking fluids mists to .5 mg/mg.3 on new
machinery, and 1.0 mg/m3 on existing systems. Have a potential application? Contact Tri-Mer Tri-Mer: More Choices in Air Pollution Control
